See race report below and put Easter Monday in your diary for next year!
On Easter Monday nearly 60 runners and some 30 walkers braved the icy wind to take part in the 6th Annual Shapwick Bunny Hop. Runners completed the 7.5 mile trail race through the fields and lanes of Shapwick and the Nature Reserve, enjoying views of Glastonbury Tor and the Mendip Hills. The hardy walkers (including several local children) completed a shorter loop of 4 miles to and from the village. The course was moderately muddy this year (it has been worse!) and there was a sharp north easterly wind.
The overall race winner (for the second year running) in a time of 48:55 was Dominic Taylor-Jones from Weston Athletic Club. First lady home was Celia Boothman who came all the way from Pembrokeshire and was 2 seconds short of breaking the female record in a time of 52:56. First Shapwick resident to finish was Steve Campion in 58:00.
All returned along with supporters for a hearty brunch which raised £193 for Save the Children. We have had some great feedback regarding all aspects of the race but especially the catering! Thanks to all who helped with catering and donated delicious cakes. Thanks to the local volunteers who helped with marshalling (a very cold job this year) and other aspects of race organisation. Thanks also to all the landowners who kindly allowed us to put up signage in their fields for the duration of the race. Finally thanks to Kate Boocock who provided a sports massage service. Her contact details will be available on the website in due course.
Over the years the Bunny Hop has become a regular on Shapwick’s social calendar. We very much hope you will come back again next year. We plan to keep the overall format, date and route but add some enhancements to the event!
